Corporal Gerald Arthrell

Gerald Arthrell was born in Glace Bay Nova Scotia, but he moved to Paris with his family when he was four years old. The family lived at 22 Dumfries Street, but Gerald was living at 6 Church Street when he enlisted. He was educated at the Paris High School. As a boy, he was interested in stamp collecting and hockey. He was for some time a trainer with the Paris Intermediates hockey team. He was employed for a few months with Penmans Ltd until he enlisted in April 1940 with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry.

Gerald Arthrell

He was with the regiment during the failed attack on Dieppe. Gerald returned to France with his regiment shortly after D-Day. Gerald was killed in action on August 11, 1944. He was 25 years of age.

His younger brother, Private George Arthrell, also served with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. Their father, Herbert Arthrell, also served in WW2.
