32 Mechanic Street
Frederick Albert Bemrose
Fred Bemrose was born in Paris and lived with his parents at 32 Mechanic Street. His parents, Walter and Gertrude, emigrated from England in 1910. The Depression forced Fred to leave school early and work as a clerk at Penman’s.
He enlisted during WWII at 26 years of age and served in C Company of the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles.
After the war, Fred returned to Penman’s and married Jean Reid in 1943. The couple had two children, John and Kathryn. Fred was the founder of the Paris Museum and Historical Society. His son, John Bemrose, wrote a novel called The Island Walkers about a variety of characters living in Paris in the years following the Second World War. Fred died in 2015 and is buried in the Paris Cemetery.
