23 William Street

Private Harold Stanley Davis

Harold Davis

Stanley Davis was born in England in 1891. He was a veteran of the First World War. He served with the Worcestershire Yeomanry of the British Army from 1914 to 1918, seeing action with this unit in Egypt.

He immigrated to Canada in 1928 and farmed in Brant and Oxford Counties before moving to Paris in 1940, shortly before his enlistment in the Second World War. He lived at 23 William Street with his wife Margaret and two children, Michael and Suzanne, who were also in military service.

He enlisted with the Veterans Guard of Canada, a citizen militia supporting the Canadian Army during the Second World War, tasked with defending mainland Canada. They were modelled after the British Home Guard. Tragically, at 51 years of age, Stanley suffered a heart attack while on duty at Bowmanville on November 8, 1942, a veteran of two world wars.
