40 Dundas Street W
Sergeant Thomas William Dore
Tommy Dore was working as a carder at Penman’s when he enlisted in Galt during WWII with the Highland Light Infantry. He grew up in Paris at 5 Ann Street, but when he enlisted he identified his address as 40 Dundas Street where he intended to live with his betrothed wife, Catherine Curtis. The marriage took place on August 9, 1940 and he shipped out days later with the Highland Light Infantry. Sadly, he did not return.
Tommy was a keen sportsman and assisted his regiment to win a camp championship, which earned him a leave in London, all expenses paid. He then repeated the feat and was rewarded with a Silver Cup. (Tommy is in the back left of this photo.)
Tommy was seriously wounded in Falaise Normandy on August 22 1944. He died at the age of 25 in Basingstoke Hospital on September 5. He is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, England.
