24 Park Ave

Herbert Hugh Hinton

Henry and Lillian (Todd) Hinton and sons Henry William and Charles Norman immigrated to Canada from England in 1911. The 1921 Census places the family with the addition of Herbert Hugh (born in Toronto on July 29,1912) and Edna (4) in York Township, with Henry working as a clerk in an office. By 1931, the family had made the move to Acton, and they are found living on Mill St.

Bert married Mary Jackson (a teacher at Acton Continuation School) on July 5, 1941, Bert listing his occupation as “Flying Instructor R.C.A.F.” Little else is known of Sgt. Pilot Hinton’s military service.

By 1949 Bert and Mary had settled at 24 Park Ave., Acton and Bert listed his occupation as merchant. Those having grown up in Acton will fondly remember Hinton’s Department Store also known as Hinton’s 5 &10, and the “Toy Land” located in the basement.

Bert died in Edmonton, Alberta on January 9, 1994 and was buried alongside his wife Mary at Fairview Cemetery in Acton.
Truly a Canadian Hero. His story lives on.
