Elmer Mainprize

Born in Rockwood on December 13, 1919, to Iva Mainprize, Elmer was raised by his maternal grandparents, William Mainprize and Sarah Dowson who lived in Acton.

Elmer enlisted in the service…out of Petawawa and was stationed in Halifax.

Elmer used the “big guns” to protect the Canadian coastline. Then family recounts the story told by Elmer of being congratulated by his senior officer for doing a great job of targeting U boats.

Following his discharge Elmer returned to Acton and to work at Beardmore tannery. He was married to Doris Bolton for 67 years and the couple had four children…Keith, Bradley, Roy and Gwen. Elmer resided at 232 McDonald Blvd., Acton.

Elmer died on April 12, 2010 and was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Acton.

Truly a Canadian Hero. His story lives on.
