9 Helen Street

Lance Corporal William Hayward

William was born at 9 Helen Street in 1917. His parents, George and Alice, were immigrants from England. William was their only child. He worked at Penman’s #1 Mill, then enlisted with the Royal Canadian Artillery in 1941. He rose to the rank of Lance Corporal. In 1941, he married Agnes Wright of Canning. The couple had five children. After the war, William returned to Penman’s until the mill closed, then worked for the Paris Playground Company. He died at 79 years of age at Telfer Place.
