65 West River Street

Leading Aircraftman Glenford E. McCoombs

Glenford McCoombs was born in 1926 and lived with his parents, Frank and Doris McCoombs, at 65 West River Street in Paris. We know nothing of his life before WW2, but we know he enlisted in C Company of the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles, where many men in Paris first enlisted during the war.

We also know that he must have transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force at some point, because he earned the rank of leading aircraftman, a rank particular to the air force.

We also know that he married Sarah Jane “Sally” Phillips in Pembrokeshire, England in 1946. Like many Canadian and American soldiers who were stationed in Britain, Glenford clearly met and married Sally in England and brought her home with him, one of hundreds of “war brides” who came to Canada and the U.S. with their husbands.

Glenford and Sally are buried together in the Paris Cemetery.
