Trooper James Morris Papps

Trooper James Papps was born in Chatham in 1922, the son of Oscar and Mary Florence Papps. He married Isabel Lenora Stephenson in Paris in 1941 and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Dragoons the following year.

Three months into James’ deployment, he was wounded leading his squadron through heavy enemy fire. For his bravery, he was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in action. His citation read: “This soldier showed the greatest determination and magnificent personal courage in carrying out his orders.

At the end of the war, he returned to his home in Paris, at 3 Monk Street. He and Isabel had six children and James died at the age of 54. He is buried in the Paris Cemetery.
