16 Broadway Street
John “Todd” Charles Monteith
John “Todd” Monteith enlisted with his twin brother, Herbert, while they were still students at Paris District High School. The Monteiths, a respected family in Paris, lived in the 1840 cobblestone house built by Levi Boughton at 16 Broadway Street. Their father, Andrew Herbert Monteith, was a Lieutenant Colonel in WWI and became a prosperous lawyer.
Both brothers enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and both brothers became pilots. They received training at St. Hubert, Trenton, Mount Hope, Hagersville and Camp Borden.
John won the Senior B WOSSA pole vault championship in 1939.
John declined the offer to become a trainer, so he could serve overseas, where he flew various missions throughout Europe. He was the captain of a Stirling bomber when his airplane was reported missing on February 19 1943. He was killed during an operational raid on Wilhelmshaven, Germany. He was 20 years of age.
He is remembered at the Runnymede Memorial Cemetery in Surrey, England.
